Outdoor Ed

Can you forgive us?

We are not members of R.E.I.

We do not mountain bike or

Road bike or own spandex

That reads “Team Chalupa.”

There is not a thon or a lon

We care to do, be it mara, bi or tri,

And I have never pruned the limbs of a

Tree,  you see, I’m quite attached

To my own and it is here I must confess

We do not camp or chop or kindle -

Despite a great love of smores – I have contact

Lenses, dammit, and I’ve always appreciated

The efforts of Thomas Edison, the running of water

In my bath.  Ragged, perhaps.  Rugged, no.  But

We love the outdoors!  We’ve even been there!

The sun has touched our faces, we walk

Places, our heart rate occasionally rises,

Isn’t that enough?  Don’t report us.  We’re lost

In the wilderness of child-rearing, but lest

You think we are not nurtured

By Nature’s nature, you’re wrong.

Yesterday, we witnessed her

In all her glory, her splendor -

Eating dinner, we turned… mesmerized.

Struck dumb.  The Chalupa whispers,

“Funny.”

Two squirrels humping on the tree.

Mom, I don’t even know what this means, but anything involving me and a bath I’d rather not be made public.

My neighbors are heading off on a safari in Africa, to be followed by a hike up Mt. Kilimajaro (sp?). They call that fun? I just want to go to the beach.

Mmm…me loves some beach. Throw in a frosty beverage and I’m all set.

Heh. Why is nature only cool if it’s REI now? I think squirrels are so much better.

Yeah, and do you own an Arcteryx fleece? Because if you don’t, you’re so not part of the “in” outdoors crowd.

    Squirrels ain’t nothin’—cows are “funnier”.

And it’s always the kids that see these things take place… ; )

Oh, dear. I have yet to see cows, but I’m sure the Chalupa would be most amused!

Well I love the great outdoors, nature, walking and hiking but I also love cities and despite my love of nature would not want to live in the middle of nowhere without access to starbucks and the Mall. Each to their own I say! Great post.

You reminded me of when we went on our mini-vacation a few weeks ago. Where we stayed they had rabbits, chickens, turkeys, goats, horses, cows and more. As we were watching the chickens the male turkey started getting very agitated and next thing we knew he was mounting the female turkey. “Look Mommy, he’s very loud!” said our 3 year old as my husband looked on in mortified horror :-)

It’s funny. I really do love nature and enjoy being outdoors – but it’s a bit of a cult in my county.

Turkeys beat squirrels. Trust Mirabelle to tell it like it is!
